Let's say I have a video clip in my source monitor that I want to insert into a gap on v6 of the timeline. I select the gap in the timeline, right click> "AutoPatch to selection". V1 of the source would automatically be patched to v6 of the timeline. Oh joy!

Ok, what if you have a clip with multiple tracks, like a video clip with audio or a sequence with multiple video layers you are using as a source? Let's take it one at a time:
Video clip with 1 audio track: If you want to insert both audio and video, select clips or gaps anywhere on the timeline you want to insert to. For this example, we'll say I want the video to be inserted on V4 of the timeline and the audio on A1. So, I'd simply select any clips and/or gaps on V4 and A1 of the timeline, Right click>AutoPatch to selection". V1 and A1 of the source are automatically patched to V4 and A1 on the timeline.
What if you only want the video? Just select V4 in the timeline. Right click>AutoPatch to selection" and Premiere understands that you just want the video from the source clip. V1 of the source is patched to V4 of the timeline.

Source Sequence with multiple tracks.
Ok, this is admittedly trickier: Let's say we have a sequence with 3 tracks of video we'd like to use as a source (V1,V2, V3) and we'd like to insert portions of only two of those tracks, let's say V1 and V2, into the timeline on Timeline Tracks V7 and V8. First I'd select any clips or gaps in the timeline on tracks V7 and v8, right click>"AutoPatch to selection". Now Premiere is wondering, you've got 2 clip-tracks selected, but your source has 3 tracks which two do you want and where do you want 'em? Perhaps a patching dialogue could pop up where you patch the tracks. The difference between this and patching as you normally would on the timeline would be that it's narrowed down to only the two tracks you want to target. Simplifying the patch.
