Hi - newbie to excalibur (and Premiere). a few starting questions -

  1. My understanding based on a Knights - YouTube update video was that the excalibur search window location would be remembered and opened in the same screen location and subsequent openings. This is not happening for me. Is there something I need to do to enable this feature? (Premiere 2021, Big Sur)...
--side note: the text size of Excalibur windows does not adjust when dragging between differently sized screens.

  2. I saw in the help docs that "input monitoring" should be enabled for premrere in system prefs for excalibur to work properly. However, Premiere is not listed as an option for input monitoring as system prefs. Should I add it manually? (note: I've not noticed an issue testing excalibur yet...but perhaps this would come into play when creating user shortcuts?).

  3. One macro I'd love to figure out a way to create would be a twist on the "close gap" function in premiere. I'd like to be able to lasso a bunch of clips eliminate gaps between them, even if clips on other tracks occupy the same place on the timeline. For example, imagine an adjustment layer that lasts 10 seconds is on v2. On v1, there are three 2-second clips with gaps between them. The command would essentially ripple delete (or "close gap") between the clips without being influenced by anything else on the time line, and also without rippling anything that follows the selection on the timeline. Is some thing like this possible with Excalibur?

thanks. Looking forward to digging in more.

forgot one more question -

  1. Is it possible to keep the search bar open/floating?

    Greetings!

    1. No, Excalibur search bar is limited by Premiere API. It will always pop up in a centre of the main display. In version 1.1.0 I added possibility to switch to panel mode on Windows. Panel position will be remembered, but this is mostly a workaround for users that use IME (input method editor).
Differently sized screens: what size settings do you have for 2 screens?
    2. Interesting, normally it should be blocked. Well, if it works you can do nothing. If it will stop working, then yes, you will need to add Premiere manually.
For simulating shortcut press you will need to give "Accessibility" permission, a different one from "Input Monitoring".
    3. I think you can try to use Move Clip Start to Playhead command. Place playhead at the start of a first clip (adjustment layer should start where first clip starts as well), all other clips will be moved and respect end of previous clip.
But is also a good feature request, close gaps on selection.

dhj No, Excalibur will be closed when you select command to execute. Why do you want that?

      Sir_Ivan thanks for the replies...

Move Clip to Playhead seems to have potential for what I'm looking for, thanks. But, yes, a more straightforward "close gaps on selection" seems like it could be pretty useful.

keeping the window floating could accomplish a couple things - skipping the step of re-opening and keeping the position of the floating window handy where i want it. just always nearby, in the spot i want it on the screen, ready to be used...somewhat akin to floating palettes in keyboard maestro, i suppose. that said, if i understood your answer above correctly - about making it a panel option for windows - that could accomplish the same thing i suppose if you did the same for mac...

My desire is to make search bar appear at mouse position (or at some specific place if user wants to define it, like spotlight on macOS). At some point it will be possible.
With these features to be introduced, would you still like to see it open constantly? If yes, will you activate it with mouse click?

      • dhj replied to this.

Sir_Ivan Having it open at desired location would certainly be a step forward. But, yes, the way I'm currently using it it would nice to just have it open at all times. And, yes, I'd imagine clicking and then typing to activate....

That being said, its quite possible that my workflows could evolve to the point where I would no longer want it always open. As a new user to premiere (and video editing in general, my background is in pro tools and audio), I'm still learning and designing my workflows. As I get things fine tuned and have shortcuts and macros developed, I imagine I'd be less interested and reliant on using the excalibur search function at all. Hard to say.

Another idea that might be interesting (IDK if its possible with the API) would be to have floating palettes with a list of specific shortcuts/macros one could trigger simply by clicking on the name of the macro in the list...like keyboard maestro. Sometimes there are very specific macros one needs, but not often enough to devote a whole keystroke shortcut to it.

Understood! Well, I don't plan to add persistent search bar to Excalibur, as it feels like a different approach from a pop-up search, but I do consider the idea of a floating panel/palette (also it could be docked) with access to Excalibur commands, so that should be implemented at some point as well 🙂
