Ok, this one is a little out there, and I’ll admit, I don’t know if I’ve thought it all the way through. It all stems from my frustration with track targeting/source patching in Premiere which was WAY better in Avid, in my opinion… but then I was thinking about how Premiere is so much better with what Avid would call “Segment mode” where you’re selecting clips in a timeline and dragging them around, etc. Aaaaanyway, the basic idea is that you’d control source patching and track targeting by whatever clip(s) you have selected in the timeline...
Let's talk target tracks first:
What if you could select targets based on any clip or gap you've selected in the timeline and you don't have to mouse all the way left or use a series of deselect/select commands in order to target your track? Simply click a clip or gap that's on the track you want to target, then right click>"Target track of selected clip". (Which of course you could program to a keyboard shortcut and not need to right-click). This would, by nature, deselect all other tracks (yes audio and video!) and just select the track(s) of the clip(s) you've selected.
